Every boxer dog parent is afraid of a chocolate raid by their dog, and it happened to me Monday night. While we were out to dinner, Cassius decided to treat himself to 4 large chocolate chip cookies.
I don't normally leave "hazardous" materials on the counters, but I was in a rush out the door and left a bag of cookies, brought all the way from Charleston, South Carolina by my friend Cornelia, on the counter. Upon arriving home from dinner, I found a half eaten paper bag in the front lawn. I didn't realize what Cassius had gotten into for about 5 minutes (when I started fantasizing about chocolate chip cookies for dessert). Once it was clear the torn up bag was the cookie bag, I called the pet hospital to find out what to do. They were pretty confident that he hadn't eaten a dangerous amount of chocolate, but recommended we induce vomitting using hydrogen peroxide if we were worried, and if he'd consumed the cookies within the last hour/hour.5. He didn't seem to be ill at all and we were pretty sure the little piggy must have eaten the cookies more than 2 hours before we arrived home, so we decided not to give him the hydrogen peroxide. Cassius is fine and never showed any signs of being anything but proud of himself for the successful cookie raid. I guess we were lucky! I will be much more careful in the future with chocolate in the house. Your gut knows best, so if you suspect animal cruelty or abuse it is your job to do something about it. Animal cruelty and abuse comes in many forms. From lack of proper care and physical abuse (being tied to a tree in the cold or heat) or violence, to neglect, abandonment, animal fighting, and inadequate shelter. There are many forms of cruelty or abuse.
Many years ago, in the freezing winter, I was woke by a dog barking and barking and barking. Finally I got out of bed and went to my window. It was clear that dog was outside at 2 a.m. and freezing for hours. I say hours because it took me about at least an hour to find the information I needed to make a phone call. I write this post hoping that it will save you time and maybe an animals life especially boxer puppies for sale. I know my call did early hours of that day. I did not care that my neighbor would probably hate me or that it that there may have been a reason the dog was outside. It didn’t matter. It is not my job to figure it out. Had it been during the day, I might’ve walked down and knocked on the door. But it was not, and I was not going to wait until morning with the freezing temperatures. This happens more often than not. People think, it’s not my problem – but it is. It is your responsibility. If not you, then who? Okay, I am done preaching … here is the information you need. The best thing you can do is report your suspicions of cruelty to your local law enforcement agency, humane organization, animal control agency or taxpayer-funded animal shelter. It has been almost a week since our Astrid crossed the rainbow bridge. For the most part Bodhi seems okay. He has had a few moments of looking a bit sad. His ears perked up a bit when he heard us mention Astrid's name, and he seemed to look around for her hoping she had returned. However, we think he knew she was dying before we did.
. As I noted in a previous blog, I found Bodhi standing over Astrid quietly, then laying down next to her. I felt he knew that her time was near, The day she passed I made sure that he came over to see her so he could have closure. I did not want him to see her leave and not understand that she was 'gone'. After he spent a moment with her, he pretty much vanished and stayed clear. The next day he was quiet, and seemed lonely. Before her passing, the two were peas in a pod, always traveling around the house together, barking at stuff together, begging together, going potty together in the yard, etc...etc. He followed her like she was Queen. I used to always joke if Bodhi went first Astrid would be fine with it, but if Astrid went first that Bodhi would be devastated. Astrid was definitely the Alpha around here (ranking just under me of course) - but now Bodhi seems to be stepping into her role a bit in a subtle way. i.e. taking her spot on the bed and no longer waiting to eat (he used to wait until she had her food before he ate) Overall I think he's doing pretty good, like all of us, I think he has his moments... Have you hugged your Boxer(s) today? |
